| At lunch today in Landis Homes, I overheard a middle aged guy at the next table explaining to his friends that global warming is a hoax - temps are going up and CO2 concentrations just happen to be going up with it. His evidence? He claimed that the largest source of CO2 (by a factor of a thousand) is the ocean. I just don't know what to say to these people. I imagine they're getting their completely inaccurate information from conservative talkshows and the like. But really! Oceans are the largest CO2 SINK! I don't know all the nuts and bolts, my guess is that oceans may in fact release more CO2 than humans, however, oceans also absorb more CO2 than they release, making them a net sink. In fact, oceans have absorbed ~1/3 of all anthropogenic CO2 emissions! |
